The origin of dance is just as complex as the continent of Africa. Ethnic dance is affiliated with race, same customs or a specific group and not to be confused with African dance as the only representative.

Cultural variations of African dance and music are vast with many traditions in the land. The Dunham technique is classified as an ethnic style of movement that Katherine Dunham one of the pioneers of dance influenced, she developed this style of dancing from the movement and culture of the Caribbean, west and South America.
