SAUL STEINBERG
Steinberg’s work takes me down memory lane where crazy shapes of curves and crooked lines form storytelling images. I wonder if his work was ever seen as average. What did he do different that set him apart in the art race?
Interestingly, I have always been attracted to line work, the false appearance of simplicity that sends emotional messages to the viewer to comprehend. Saul Steinberg’s work brings back memories of why I didn’t choose art on my first journey during my quest in higher education. The remembrance that there were so many talented artists struggling for acknowledgment to erase the starving artist label placed upon their self-esteem. Half a century later, I never thought I would end up in relationship with my first love spending days sketching, drawing, smudging ink and paint marks.
There is a sense of freedom in Steinberg’s work filled with line markings in pencil, pen and crayon. My hope is that every young artists takes the time to visit an exhibition of Saul Steinberg and realize they have the power to shift what appears as the impossible into a successful journey in a career of Art.
